NEW YORK – The Coast Guard terminated the voyage of a fishing vessel due to safety concerns 32 miles south of Sandy Hook, N.J., Thursday.
A boarding team from the Coast Guard Cutter Sailfish noted multiple safety violations aboard the 78-foot Jaime Mae. The vessel had only three working fire extinguishers, an expired EPIRB – or electronic position indicating radio beacon – and there was water leaking in through the shaft seal, as well as from holes in the deck and the hull as a result of corrosion. The vessel was escorted to safe harbor in Point Pleasant, N.J.
“The operator volunteered to return to port to effect repairs and the vessel is presently being inspected,” said Coast Guard Petty Officer 1st Class Stacy Slavinski, an operations specialist with the Coast Guard’s Sector Delaware Bay command center in Philadelphia.
“Safety on the water applies to both commercial and recreational vessels,” said Slavinski.
The Jaime Mae is homeported in Point Pleasant, N.J. The Coast Guard Cutter Sailfish is homeported in Sandy Hook, N.J.
