NEW YORK – A boat crew from Coast Guard Station East Moriches, N.Y., rescued a 49-year-old man from the water near Moriches Inlet today.

At approximately 2:45 p.m., a Good Samaritan reported a capsized vessel with one person in the water. The rescue boat crew from the station was already underway nearby and immediately diverted to the scene.

The boat crew rescued the man from the water and assessed him for injuries and hypothermia.

The man was not wearing a life jacket.

"As the air and water temperatures drop, its important for boaters to remember to carry the proper safety equipment on board their vessel and wear a life jacket," said Petty Officer 2nd Class Michael Fusco, the officer of the day at Station Shinnecock, parent command for Station East Moriches. "This boater got lucky that someone was in the area to call for help."
