Coast Guard cutter receives award for community outreach NEW YORK - Media is invited aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Sturgeon Bay as the crew is recognized for donating hundreds of hours to community service at a ceremony in Bayonne, N.J., Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2008 at 10 a.m. Capt. Joseph Kolb, Coast Guard Deputy Director, Office of Civil Rights, of Washington, D.C., will present the Partnership in Education (PIE) award to the crew of the Sturgeon Bay for various educational outreach projects conducted from June of 2007 to June of 2008. "We invested a lot of time in our local schools and helping the kids with many different educational tools, including classes on navigation, knot tying and assisting with science fair projects," said Lt. Scott Rae, commanding officer of the Sturgeon Bay. "We also held events on the ship and took several classes underway, including Naval Cadets. Overall we assisted about 1200 students throughout our contributions to the program." Units earn the PIE award for outstanding contributions to the local community with a focus in outreach to various schools and other educational programs. The program got its start with the National and Community Service Act of 1990. "We took the time to go out to the schools and get the kids underway with us to show the face of the Coast Guard, while helping them with their education," said Lt. Ken Sauerbrunn, the executive officer of the Sturgeon Bay. "Working with the kids and just showing them how we do things can have an enormous impact."
