Update: Missing boater's vessel found 20 miles south of East Rockaway, N.Y.
NEW YORK – The 19-foot pleasure craft belonging to a missing boater was found 20 miles south of East Rockaway, N.Y., at around 7:30 a.m. today.
Edward Lacz Sr., 65, was reported missing by his son after the man did not return from a fishing trip. The man's vehicle and trailer were located at Sewaren Marina in Sewaren, N.J.
The vessel was located by a Coast Guard rescue jet conducting searches in the area and inspected by a Coast Guard Station Jones Beach rescue boat crew.
“We wound up finding a wallet and lifejackets,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class James Grant, the coxswain of the 47-foot Motor lifeboat crew that helped find the vessel. “The key was still in the ignition and the throttle was forward. We proceeded to tow the vessel toward Sandy Hook and Sandy Hook’s 47 picked it up.”
Two Coast Guard rescue boat crews were launched from Coast Guard Station Sandy Hook, as well as a rescue helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City.
A New York City Police Department helicopter crew and the Sandy Hook Park Police also assisted in the search.
Coast Guard cutters Tybee and Bainbridge Island, as well as an HH-60 rescue helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod continue the offshore search.
