Coast Guard enforces safety zone around downed plane
***Editors Note: Follow these links for new photos and video of the response.*** New York-Coast Guard crews are enforcing a 200-yard waterside safety zone around a downed US Airways plane on the Hudson River Jan. 16, 2009. The plane has been safely secured to the sea wall near North Cove Marina, which is located north of Battery Park. Rescue crews will continue to patrol the area until the damaged aircraft has been safely removed. The removal of the partially submerged airbus will be coordinated by the National Transportation and Safety Board. The Coast Guard, New York Police and Fire Departments, New York Waterways and Circle Line ferry rescue teams launched a multi-asset response yesterday when the plane ditched onto the Hudson River, at approximately 3:30 p.m. Upon initial notification, Coast Guard Sector New York launched a fleet of small rescue boats and the 87-foot Coast Guard Cutter Ridley, based in Montauk, was diverted to the scene. The Katherine Walker also arrived on scene to assist in the search and rescue efforts and enforcement of the safety zones. Three helicopters from Air Station Atlantic City, N.J., and one from Air Station Cape Cod, Mass., worked closely with New York City Police air assets to provide aerial support. The cause of the incident is under investigation by the NTSB.
