Coast Guard urges public to remain vigilant in spring weather NEW YORK - The Coast Guard is urging the public to remain vigilant and cautious around the waters of “Even though there have been a few days of warmer weather, the water is still extremely cold,” said Capt. Dan Ronan, Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound’s Commanding Officer. “The water temp is still below 50 degrees and can induce hypothermia very quickly. We also have periods of high winds around this time of year which can pose a hazard to recreational vessels and beachgoers alike.” On an average day, the Coast Guard will save 15 lives, assist 114 in distress and conduct 82 search and rescue operations. More than 76 million recreational boaters share the water with commercial traffic throughout the The Coast Guard strongly urges the public to wear lifejackets anytime while out on the water and to check weather conditions before heading out. Having proper survival gear while underway and filing a float plan with the Coast Guard, as well as friends and family is also strongly recommended.
