NEW YORK - Coast Guard Station Fire Island rescue boat crews and a Good Samaritan respond to a boat fire May 30, 2009.

Coast Guard, Good Samaritan rescue boater from vessel fire

NEW YORK - A Good Samaritan rescued a person in the water after their 27-foot boat became engulfed in flames about one mile east of Coast Guard Station Fire Island, N.Y., at 2:10 p.m. today.

The Good Samaritan contacted Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound via marine band radio channel 16 at 2 p.m. after seeing the boater attempting to swim toward the shore.

The Good Samaritan transferred the boater to a Coast Guard Station Fire Island rescue vessel, which brought him to awaiting emergency medical personnel at the station.

The boater reportedly suffered burn injuries to his face and arms from the fire.

The boater was not wearing a life jacket.

"This situation could have been a lot worse had the Good Samaritan not been close by and stopped to help the distressed boater," said Lt. Doug Miller, Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound command duty officer. "It's important to always be on the lookout for fellow boaters in need when out on the water."

Rescue crews from the Suffolk County Marine Police and Fire Rescue, Coast Guard Auxiliary, local law enforcement and fire department are also on scene.

The cause of the fire is unknown.
