Good Samaritans to receive Coast Guard award for daring rescue

NEW YORK –The captain of a party boat and another mariner are to be honored in a ceremony for their role in a daring rescue in Brooklyn, N.Y., Sunday.

Capt. Cody Catapono and Capt. Dave Paris, who both came to the rescue of six people whose vessel capsized in Jamaica Bay May 10, will receive a Good Samaritan Award from Congressman Anthony Weiner and Capt. Robert O’Brien, Coast Guard Sector New York’s commanding officer.

Anthony Dattolo, 26, and Lisa Shaver, 24, were rescued by Catapono, while Anthony Blas, 23, Daniele Caliendo, 26, Erik Halka, 24, and Jason Damone, 26, were plucked from the frigid water in Jamaica Bay by Paris onboard the vessel Captain Dave II. The six survivors encountered 35 mile-per-hour winds and high waves, which caused the vessel to capsize.

“We are very pleased to be able to recognize these citizens for their heroic actions,” said O’Brien. “Without their efforts, the outcome of this case might have been very different, and because of their willingness to answer a call for help, these families were given a second chance.”

The mariners who capsized will be present at the ceremony with their families.
