Coast Guard, local agencies searching for missing man near Long Beach

NEW YORK – The Coast Guard and local agencies are searching for a man reported missing at Long Beach, N.Y., around 8:15 a.m. today.

A rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station Jones Beach, Atlantic Beach Rescue, Nassau County Police air units and New York City Fire Department air units are searching an area offshore, concentrating on the ocean side near the Atlantic Street Bridge in the Rockaways.

“We are working very closely with our local rescue agencies to try and locate this man,” said Lt. Doug Miller, Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound’s command duty officer. “There are both land and air unit scouring the water and the beach.  We’re searching in two-to-three foot surf and water temperatures of 59 degrees.”

A 13-year-old girl was also recovered from the water by a Good Samaritan and transferred to Emergency Medical Service personnel. The condition of the girl is unknown.
