Coast Guard, multiple agencies searching for fisherman in Jamaica Bay
NEW YORK--The Coast Guard is searching for a 19-year old fisherman who was reportedly swept into a sink hole while near the North Channel Bridge in Jamaica Bay, N.Y., today.
Coast Guard Sector New York received a call from Citywide, New York City's emergency service, at about 2:30 p.m. stating that two fishermen were reportedly in the water. Two passerby's on Howard Beach saw that the men were in distress and were able to pull one of them out of the sink hole.
Rescue boat crews from Coast Guard Station New York, New York Police Department (NYPD), New York Fire Department (FDNY) and the Park Police are on scene searching for the second mariner. Dive crews from the NYPD and FDNY have been deployed in the search, and a NYPD rescue helicopter crew is also on scene.
The two men were reportedly fishing in waist high water when one of them was pulled into the sink hole. The other attempted to help him, and was also pulled into the sink hole.
The rescued mariner was taken to a local hospital.
