Coast Guard rescues eight off Liberty Island

New York --The Coast Guard rescued eight boaters off Liberty Island N.J., after their 36-foot pleasure craft ran aground late this afternoon.

Coast Guard Sector New York received a call from a representative of BOAT US at 5:25 p.m. stating that a boat had run aground in the vicinity of Liberty Island and was taking on water.

Sector New York launched two rescue boat crews from Station New York to assist.

The rescue boat crew arrived on scene along with the New York City Fire Department and the New Jersey State Police unit Marine 1. Rescue crewmembers from Station New York’s 45-foot medium response boat safely transferred all eight people aboard.

Engineers from Station New York then began dewatering the grounded boat with a pump.

Six of the eight boaters were brought to Station New York located in Staten Island N.Y. where they were met by awaiting family members. The other two boaters plan to remain with the Coast Guard until their boat can salvaged.

The rescued boaters were reported to be in good condition and were all wearing life jackets at the time of rescue.
