Coast Guard, multiple agencies responding to mid-air collision on Hudson (UPDATE) NEW YORK – The Coast Guard and multiple agencies are continuing to search the Hudson River for the passengers of a mid-air collision between a helicopter and a small plane near Pier 40 around noon today. It was confirmed that one body was recovered. It was incorrectly reported earlier that one person was found alive by the New York Fire Department. Three people were reportedly onboard the small airplane, a Piper Saratoga that took off from Teterboro Airport, N.Y. and the helicopter, which was later confirmed to be a Liberty Tours helicopter, was reportedly carrying six to seven people. Five rescue boat crews from Coast Guard Station New York, a Coast Guard rescue helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City, and several Coast Guard Auxiliary vessels are working with the New York City Police and Fire Departments in the recovery effort. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are scanning the area with a side-scanning sonar in an attempt to locate the wreckage. "Pending confirmation of the location and recovery of the passengers involved, the Coast Guard continues to actively search with the assistance of our port partners," said Cmdr. Tony Ceraolo, Coast Guard Sector New York's incident command representative. The incident is under investigation and more details will be released as they become available. |
