Coast Guard suspends search for missing man near Charles Island, Conn.

NEW YORK - The search for a man who went missing near Charles Island, Conn., was suspended around 11 a.m. today pending further developments.

Michael Krupa, 22, of Middletown, Conn., was kayaking with a friend when their two-seater kayak capsized just off of Charles Island around 2 a.m. Sunday morning. Krupa’s friend managed to swim to a nearby sailboat that was anchored and contacted authorities.

Both men were not wearing lifejackets.

“Coast Guard assets covered approximately 133 square miles along with 767 miles of various track line searches,” said Lt. Jarod Toczko, Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound’s command duty officer. “It is unfortunate that we were unable to locate Krupa and it is always very hard for the Coast Guard to suspend in these cases. Our deepest condolences are extended to his family during this difficult and tragic time.”

Rescue crews and agencies that participated in the search include:

  • boat crews from Coast Guard Station New Haven;
  • Coast Guard auxiliary boats and aviation teams;
  • the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Tiger Shark, homeport in Newport, R.I.;
  • personnel from the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection
  • the Connecticut State Police;
  • first responders from the Milford, West Haven and Stratford Police and Fire Departments;
  • Rescue helicopter crews from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod and Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City
