<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: times new roman,times;">The LA51 is a short-range warning device that produces a flash and loud noise and is used when other methods fail to get the attention of mariners in violation of local and federal laws or regulations, such as unauthorized entry to on-water security zones. Other warning methods for communicating with mariners include lights, siren and marine band radio. The LA51 is a safe addition to the current inventory of warning devices used by the Coast Guard.</span></span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: times new roman,times;"><span style="font-size: small;">NEW YORK &ndash; The Coast Guard is offering accredited representatives of the media seats aboard Coast Guard aircraft during International Ice Patrol flights and the at-sea centennial commemorative wreath-layings over the RMS Titanic resting site, beginning Feb. 1, 2012.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: times new roman,times;"><span style="font-size: small;">The mission of the </span></span><a href="http://www.navcen.uscg.gov/?pageName=IIPHome"><span style="font-family: times new roman,times;"><span style="font-size: small;">International Ice Patrol</span></span></a><span style="font-family: times new roman,times;"><span style="font-size: small;"> is to monitor the iceberg danger near the Grand Banks of Newfoundland and provide the iceberg limit to the maritime community.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: times new roman,times;"><span style="font-size: small;">The RMS Titanic sank on April 15, 1912, after striking an iceberg near the Grand Banks of Newfoundland in the North Atlantic Ocean. The tremendous loss of life in this preventable tragedy led to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea in 1914.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: times new roman,times;"><span style="font-size: small;">International Ice Patrol was conducted by the Revenue Cutter Service starting in 1913 and was formally established by the SOLAS convention. The sole purpose of the International Ice Patrol is to promote the safe navigation of the Northwest Atlantic Ocean when the danger of iceberg collision exists.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: times new roman,times;"><span style="font-size: small;">Since the 1960s, International Ice Patrol has commemorated the sinking of the Titanic by dropping wreaths near the location of the sinking.</span></span></p>

<p>Prior to Hurricane Irene making landfall, the Ridley contacted Liberty Landing Marina in the hopes of topping off their fuel before transiting to the avoidance area on the Hudson River.&nbsp; Ms. Boggs stayed open later than recommended by local authorities to accommodate the Ridley, as well as assisting other units, local boats and ferries needing fuel.&nbsp;</p>

The new building is designed to resemble the previous boathouse, built in 1936, and blend with the existing historical buildings on site.</p>

<p><span style="font-family: times new roman,times;"><span style="font-size: small;">What: Members of the media are invited to attend the &ldquo;The U.S. Coast Guard 9/11 New York City Response Retrospective,&rdquo; an event held to remember those who lost their lives during the attacks on the World Trade Center and to discuss the actions taken by the Coast Guard and its agency partners on and after 9/11. Representatives of the Coast Guard will be available for interviews by members of the media to discuss response and recovery operations during 9/11 and after, the Coast Guard&rsquo;s role in the maritime evacuation of Manhattan and current Coast Guard Homeland Security operations in the port.&nbsp;</span></span></p>

			<title>Media Advisory: Northeast media invited to speak with Coast Guard units</title>

				<div><p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: times new roman,times;">BOSTON&nbsp;-</span></span><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: times new roman,times;">&nbsp;As Hurricane Irene approaches the northeastern United States, the Coast Guard is advising boaters and mariners of the dangerous weather conditions the storm is generating.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: times new roman,times;">Coast Guard command centers in the northeast are issuing weather warnings and advisories via VHF channel 16 to warn people on the water of the precautions they should take. The media serve as a valuable outlet for raising awareness about the impacts of this storm on the maritime environment.</span></span></p>
